Alice : A Witch’s Cauldron

In Alice, the desperate desire to save their unborn daughter pushes Jaimy and Leon ever deeper into a spiral of madness. They cling to the promises of a mysterious midwife who insists their child is “special.” But being special comes with a heavy price: the couple must not only process the loss of their deceased son, but also learn to let him go — a burden they still struggle to carry.

The film is a brutal mental eye-opener. Themes of depression and obsession clash here with quackery and deception. How gullible are we as human beings when we desperately search for solace — even when we know, deep down, that it’s impossible? At the same time, the entire story works as a metaphor for the blind faith with which people embrace both ancient and modern religions, as well as ersatz products.
In times of (apparent) crisis, we are all too quick to turn our backs on reality, losing ourselves — and sometimes others — in spirituality.
Alice is an unheated bath of human emotions. And yes, it feels ice cold. But don’t let that scare you away, because not every fairytale ends with “happily ever after.”
With the presence of director Jan Verdijk and screenwriter Paul de Vrijer. Unfortunately, Bruges-born Anne-Laure Vandeputte will not be able to attend this premiere in her own city.
