On 25 May 2026, we received the sad news that director Yoshihiro Nishimura had passed away. This iconic Japanese genre filmmaker was known not only for his films, but also for his exceptional skill in special effects.

Japan’s Tom Savini

His remarkable craftsmanship earned him the nickname ‘Japan’s Tom Savini’. For horror fans, Savini’s name needs little introduction: a comparison that stands as a considerable honour.

Nishimura studied law, but his fascination with the distorted, surreal human bodies in Salvador Dalí’s work drew him towards cinema. Largely self-taught, he learned his craft and progressed from making commercials to becoming an acclaimed director and a master of practical effects.

His place in Razor Reel’s history

Nishimura also left his mark on Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival. In the festival’s early years, we screened his cult classic Tokyo Gore Police. We also showed The ABCs of Death (2012), the anthology film for which he directed the segment ‘Z is for Zetsumetsu’.

Two films in tribute

With Japan taking centre stage as this year’s festival focus, we pay tribute to this filmmaker by presenting two of his most memorable works.
